Top 5 Tips for Irritated Pits

Pit problems can happen to the best of us - after all, the armpit is a very delicate part of the body. So if you’ve got red, itchy, flaky, or otherwise sensitive pits, fear not! You’ve come to the right place, my friend.

What Could Be Causing My Pit Irritation?

There could be a number of reasons behind your irritation. Here are some of the most common causes:

  • Toxic Deodorant

Ingredients like aluminum, triclosan, silica, steareth-n, propylene glycol, and synthetic fragrances are linked to skin irritation and allergies. So if you’re experiencing irritation, the first thing to do is ditch that toxic deodorant.

If you’re already using a natural deodorant, check the label! Some well-known “natural” brands still contain potentially harmful ingredients that could be aggravating your skin.

  • Pit Detox

Once you switch to an all-natural deodorant and stop plugging up your pores with toxic gunk, your body will react by ramping up sweat production to flush out the buildup. This temporary phase is known as pit detox. In addition to increased perspiration, you may also experience an uptick in body odor and some tenderness in the lymph nodes as they work overtime to rid your body of toxins. It will pass! In the meantime, check out our Pit Detox Protocol for more info on how to navigate this potentially unpleasant stage.

  • Baking Soda Sensitivity

Each of us has a unique body chemistry, which means no one deodorant will work the same way for everyone. So while our baking soda deodorant is out-of-this-world for most people, it may not be right for you. It depends on whether or not your body agrees with the alkaline pH of baking soda. If you’re experiencing pit irritation while using a baking soda deodorant, for pete’s sake discontinue use! We’ve got 4 other formulations — let us help find the best one for you.

  • Essential Oil Sensitivity

Another reason for pit irritation may be that you have a sensitivity to certain essential oils. All 9 of our fantastic flavors are made with only the highest-quality pure essential oils, but the fact is... your specific body chemistry may just not vibe with some of them. That’s why we always recommend getting a mini jar (or 2) to see how you respond to certain flavors.

What Can I Do About It?

Incorporate Pit Primer

Our Pit Primer Serum is a blend of moisturizing oils that serve as your first line of defense when it comes to armpit irritation (that’s why we included it in our Pit Detox Kit!). To soothe angry pits, simply rub a few drops under each arm before bed or try layering it under your deodorant. Pro tip: this stuff doubles as an excellent all-natural facial moisturizer.

Don’t Apply Deodorant Right After Shaving

Shaving is an intense form of physical exfoliation, so applying anything directly after shaving is not wise - freshly shaved skin is more delicate and sensitive. We suggest shaving at night and applying Primal Pit Paste in the morning.

Try Different Formulas

We have FIVE natural deodorant formulas, so finding the right one for you may require a bit of experimentation. Take this quiz or read this article to get pointed in the right direction. Perhaps the best place to start is our Body Chemistry Set, which allows you to try a mini jar of our three most popular formulations to see how each works for you.

Try Different Flavors

Remember, each flavor contains different essential oils that may not work well with your body chemistry. All 9 flavors (including unscented) are available in mini jars so you can try them before committing to a full-sized deodorant.

Hi Tony! Yes, the stick contains more beeswax in order for the deodorant to hold its shape, and therefore requires a bit of softening before application – at least 5 full seconds. We have sent you an email regarding this issue so we can help you resolve it ASAP!

I have used pit paste unscented in the jar and have not experience any irritation/rash issues. However, when I try to use the stick I experience irritation/rash. My theory is the stick deodorant is much harder than what comes in a jar. You say to soften it with body by holding it in your pit. It never gets soft enough to roll on and I think forcing it on while not soft enough causes the irritation problems. I just bought 3 sticks anxious to use but almost immediately had problems. Jar works well but the stick not so much ….
It’s the same recipe isn’t it? Can I return my stick (2 in opened for jars)?
