When making the switch to natural deodorant, one of the most overlooked aspects is the detox process that will occur. It can be a rather unpleasant surprise if you’re not prepared, so we’re here to fill you in on all the detox details.

What is deodorant detox?

When we stop putting harmful chemicals into our bodies after years of using conventional deodorant, it’s a shock to the system. You’re bound to have a physical response to such an abrupt shift in chemistry. As your body adjusts to natural deodorant, it’s working to rid itself of toxins, aluminum, and synthetics. This transition period is known as armpit detox.

How do I know if I’m experiencing pit detox?

You’re sweating more than usual.

If you’ve been using an antiperspirant, have you ever wondered why you are still sweating a lot and why you have looked toward needing Clinical strength options that just have more aluminum or even Botox to stop the insanexcess sweating!?  You should expect to sweat with a natural deodorant, but a lot less – which is actually a great thing. Antiperspirants work by clogging your sweat glands, and like a large river dam, your glands just cant hold back the sweat forever, thus you experience breakthrough sweating.  Those freshly unplugged pores might go into overdrive trying to expel the toxins and sweat they’ve been holding onto for so long. But all that excess sweating is temporary, so hang in there. Your body will regulate itself and go back to sweating the normal and natural amount.

You smell. A lot.

We know, we know. The whole point of deodorant is to not smell. But along with the aforementioned sweat that comes with switching to natural deodorant, odor-causing bacteria also come pouring out. Rest assured that once these toxins are flushed out of your system, your body will reset and you’ll have far less body odor (and sweat) than before.

Your armpits are tender.

Your lymph nodes, which are responsible for filtering out toxins, may become a bit sensitive as they work double-time to remove several year’s worth of inflammatory substances. Once all that junk is flushed out of your system, your lymph nodes will be able to relax and the tenderness will fade.

Can I do anything to make pit detox easier?

Yep. Remember, deodorant detox is only temporary, and it will pass. The simplest way to navigate the transition is with our Skin Soothing Oil – it’s got everything you’ll need for a quick and easy detox. But there are some things you can do on your own to help reduce any unpleasantness.

Drink lots of water. Flush those toxins, baby.
Pay attention to your diet. Health begins within, so eating highly processed food will only add to the toxins floating around your system and make B.O. worse. Stick to green leafy vegetables, fresh fruit, lean protein, and high-quality fats.
Exercise. Working up a sweat will help move the detox process along.
Try dry brushing – exfoliate and facilitate detox by stimulating the lymph nodes.

Keep in mind…

If your detox symptoms last longer than a few weeks, or if you experience swelling, bumps, or painful red areas, consult your doctor. Everyone’s body chemistry is different.  Some people have a sensitivity to baking soda and or essential oils.

Remember, we make several different formulas of natural deodorant, each with a different active ingredient, so it may take a little time to find the right one for your unique body chemistry, but we can help guide you to make sure you find the right one specifically to fit your needs.
