When making the switch to natural deodorant, one of the most overlooked aspects is the detox process that will occur. It can be a rather unpleasant surprise if you’re not prepared, so we’re here to fill you in on all the detox details.
WHAT IS ARMPIT DETOX?
When we stop putting harmful chemicals into our bodies after years of using conventional deodorant, it’s a shock to the system. You’re bound to have a physical response to such an abrupt shift in chemistry. As your body adjusts to natural deodorant, it’s working to rid itself of toxins, aluminum, and synthetics. This transition period is known as armpit detox.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M EXPERIENCING PIT DETOX?
You’re sweating more than usual.
If you’ve been using an antiperspirant, you should expect to sweat more with a natural deodorant - which is actually a great thing. Antiperspirants work by clogging your sweat glands, so when you stop using them, your body is finally free to do what it’s meant to… sweat. Those freshly unplugged pores might go into overdrive trying to expel the toxins and sweat they’ve been holding onto for so long. But all that excess sweating is temporary, so hang in there.
You’re stinkier than usual.
We know, we know. The whole point of deodorant is to banish B.O. But along with the aforementioned schvitzing that comes with switching to natural deodorant, odor-causing bacteria also come pouring out. Rest assured that once these toxins are flushed out of your system, your body will reset and you’ll have far less body odor (and sweat) than before.
Your armpits are tender.
Your lymph nodes, which are responsible for filtering out toxins, may become a bit sensitive as they work double time to remove several years worth of inflammatory substances. Once all that junk is flushed out of your system, your lymph nodes will be able to relax and the tenderness will fade.
IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO DURING THE DETOX PERIOD TO MAKE IT EASIER?
Yes! Remember, this is a temporary transition phase, and it will pass. The simplest way to navigate an armpit detox is with our Pit Detox Bundle - it’s got everything you’ll need for a quick and easy detox. But there are some things you can do on your own to help reduce any unpleasantness.
- Drink lots of water. Flush those toxins, baby.
- Pay attention to your diet. Health begins within, so eating highly processed food will only add to the toxins floating around your system and make B.O. worse. Stick to green leafy vegetables, fresh fruit, lean protein and high-quality fats.
- Exercise. Working up a sweat will help move the detox process along.
- Try dry brushing, an exfoliating practice that facilitates detoxification and stimulates the lymph nodes.
KEEP IN MIND...
If your detox symptoms last longer than a few weeks, or if you experience swelling, bumps, or painful red areas, consult your doctor. This could be a sign of an allergic reaction.
Also, there are various formulations of natural deodorant, each with a different active ingredient, and many people need to experiment a bit to find the one that’s best for them. We created this quiz to help you find the perfect formula for your post-detox pits; there’s one for every body!
